Health insurance for cross-border commuters from Austria to Switzerland / Liechtenstein

As a cross-border commuter from Austria to Switzerland or Liechtenstein, there are 3 health insurance options. Which of these options suits you best depends very much on your situation: current age, state of health, family situation and the desired level of benefits.

We will be happy to work with you to find the best solution!

Voluntary statutory health insurance in Austria

Advantages:

Free co-insurance for family members who are not gainfully employed

No health check – everyone receives insurance

Disadvantages:

Income-related contribution calculation (as at 2025: 7.55% of gross income, max. € 526.79 per month)

High co-payments for medical treatment in Switzerland

High co-payments for specialists in Austria

Rather low level of benefits, for example for dentures

A high level of benefits can only be achieved through supplementary tariffs

Statutory insurance in Switzerland or Liechtenstein

Advantages:

Free co-insurance for family members who are not gainfully employed

No health check – everyone receives insurance

Disadvantages:

A high level of benefits can only be achieved through supplementary tariffs

Deductible from SFR 300 to SFR 2,500 (fixed annual cost sharing; health insurance benefits only start once you have paid in)

Max. 90% assumption of costs. 10% is always a deductible

Compulsory basic insurance only covers dental treatment costs in exceptional cases and for particularly serious illnesses

In Switzerland, the doctor will inform you whether the treatment is covered by basic insurance or not. In Austria, this is not possible, which can result in high unexpected costs.

Private health insurance in Austria

Advantages:

Comprehensive services available in Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein

Age-dependent contribution calculation

Very favorable premiums for young people

100% cost coverage in hospital (also in special class on request)

100% assumption of costs by the doctor or specialist you trust

100% cost coverage at the dentist

Preferential treatment by doctors (e.g. greatly reduced waiting times)

Access to the best treatment methods

Disadvantage:

Health check – the insurance company checks whether the insurance cover can be offered

An overview of health insurance for cross-border commuters:

Health insurance from the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK) can be particularly useful if you either earn a very low income, e.g. as a trainee, or if you have a part-time job with a tendency towards lower income and want to insure family members free of charge at the same time. In this case, statutory health insurance offers cross-border commuters the opportunity to take advantage of ÖGK’s free family insurance. If you are single, have a medium or high income or if comprehensive benefits in both countries are important to you, this option is less interesting. This is because Austrian statutory health insurance usually only covers part of the treatment costs and pays according to a clearly defined minimum standard.

Statutory basic insurance under the KVG in Switzerland or Liechtenstein is the least popular health insurance option for cross-border commuters. There are numerous reasons for this. On the one hand, the scope of cover of basic insurance under the KVG only corresponds to a minimum standard, similar to statutory insurance in Austria, but in many cases – e.g. the dentist – it is even significantly worse. The scope of cover can be improved with supplementary packages, but you will have to dig deep into your pockets. In addition to the high premiums and all the additional tariffs, some of which are really necessary, there are also deductibles of between SFR 300 and SFR 2,500. This means that up to the selected deductible amount, all benefits in a calendar year are borne by the insured person. Insurance cover only comes into effect once the deductible has been paid.

Private health insurance in Austria is the most popular health insurance option for cross-border commuters to Switzerland / Liechtenstein, as there are numerous advantages and no real disadvantages. This model entitles you to benefits in both countries. At the same time, contributions are not dependent on income and are generally much cheaper than with statutory health insurance (ÖGK). As a privately insured person, you also enjoy numerous advantages such as shorter waiting times, access to the best doctors, dentists and clinics and 100% cost coverage with no excess. Statutory insurance cannot compete with this offer. As a rule, private health insurance for cross-border commuters is therefore almost always chosen due to the significantly better scope of cover and the lower premiums.

Health insurance for cross-border commuters is as varied and individual as you and your personal situation. You should therefore seek advice from independent experts for cross-border commuters! We are not tied to any insurance company and will be happy to explain all the advantages and disadvantages of each option to you. Together with you, we will definitely find a tailor-made solution and will of course also be on hand with help and advice for all other questions and matters.
